The more invested we become in something, the closer to it we move.
It’s a risk management response. The more of your eggs in a particular basket, the more you want to know about its state and location. This proximity, with all its benefits, has one distinct drawback. The big picture is lost.
We concentrate so intensely on the security of the basket that we no longer have the time to look a few steps ahead. This loss of perspective creates a new layer of risk. It’s a particularly challenging one to address. Mostly because we think we can swing it.
An outside perspective carries immense weight. It’s helpful to seek it out every so often.
If nothing else, it helps us make sense of the journey.
