Proximity tends to manifest in these two ways. When it’s superficial it breeds frustration and contempt. It highlights differences and accentuates contrasts. It polarises and separates. When it is intentional and personal, it breeds tolerance, compassion and understanding. It celebrates that which binds us together. It highlights the beauty in the nuances.
Our experience of other peoples’ space is less a consequence of their behaviour, and more a result of our expectation.
