Every member of the team is critical. If this was not the case, the position would not exist. The challenge is that some positions receive more limelight or prestige than others. It’s different for every sport, but is it prevalent in most of them.

Being a team player means that my primary focus is to be who the team needs me to be. If this happens to create notoriety as a consequence, that’s just icing on the cake. Soon though, this icing becomes the whole meal for many athletes. It breaks down trust and team performance always suffers.

The same thing happens in business. The amount of attention or accolades you receive can never be the measure of your value. Whenever someone in your team is rewarded with attention from the world, that is a result of your contribution as well.

This is why even physio’s get world cup medals when their team wins.
