When change happens slowly

Some change is revolutionary. It’s drastic and happens virtually overnight. Disruption, political turmoil and natural disasters are great examples. Some change happens at a more evolutionary pace. It’s still drastic, but the longer timeframe makes it more palatable.

When we intentionally implement change, shorter timeframes are preferable. It reduces the risk of incomplete execution. When we design changes, shorter timeframes work to our advantage.

Big changes to not submit easily to short time spans. This slow pace fools us into the idea that we can control and steer it. Really, it’s more like a glacier. Once it’s set in a direction, nothing stops it, nothing steers it.

To avoid our intentional changes becoming glaciers that forge their own path to a destination we did not intend requires significant and intermittent interventions.

As the urgency dies down, so does the focus. Frames of consciousness shift to more important matters. Before you know it, the previous status quo has returned.

Constant recalibration, recalculation, and response to progress are what keeps these slow, significant changes on track. It requires an ‘interim transition culture’ with all the symbols, language and practices to navigate successfully.

It’s useful to note when we undergo significant changes in our personal and professional lives. If you are in it for the long haul, pack lunch.
