High-performance teams

The concept of teamwork has validity but it’s not universal. Da Vinci and Michelangelo come to mind. Just because you have a team doesn’t mean it’s relevant.

Teams are more susceptible to performance issues because of the interdependence amoung the members. The causes a multiplication factor on poor performers.

High functioning teams are as much a product of culture as it is of intentional design.

We start with the objectives this team is created to achieve. We define the environment this team is set to function in and we define the skillsets required for the team to effectively and efficiently execute the objectives.

In practice, this usually ends up as teams consisting of a bunch of people with similar skill sets all competing with one another to create  ‘healthy’ pressure for the ‘team’.

The word ‘department’ is probably a better descriptor. If the word ‘self-management’ scares you. Perhaps it’s better this way.
