We tend to delay things. Especially things we don’t like doing. We leave them till the last possible minute. It works because we are always done on time.
We get last minute work done on time because tasks tend to fill the time we available to do them. All the more reason to leave them till the last minute. Logic suggests that this is the most efficient route.
The reality is different. Tasks fill the available last minute time because we complete the task at the highest quality we are able to achieve in the time available. Our ability to finish on time is much less a function of our prowess in time planning and much more our willingness to use time as the measure for quality and excellence.
Planned, measured approaches breed quality and consistency. Last minute work just gets stuff done.
If you must do work last minute, make sure it is work where quality is irrelevant.
